Hummingbird and Passionflowers

Artist: Martin Johnson Heade
Year: 1875-85
Between 1880 and 1904, Martin Johnson Heade, a devoted naturalist, contributed more than a hundred writings on hummingbirds to Forest and Stream.
Although he began painting hummingbirds as early as 1862, many of these works were created between 1875 and 1885, following his final journey to South America. Deeply influenced by Darwinian thought, Heade’s paintings beautifully explore the intricate relationship between hummingbirds and passionflowers, highlighting the delicate interconnectedness of nature
